Today, we presented results from our pilot on equality data within Lumena, a tool to better understand participants' experiences of equality.
With the support of Tobias Hübinette developed a tool to ask questions about all grounds of discrimination, the experience of discrimination in society at large but also in relation to authorities and in the Lumena project.
While there were concerns about the sensitivity of the issues prior to the collection, the response from participants showed otherwise:
80 % did not find the questions difficult or uncomfortable, and many described them as important and long-awaited. At the same time, some reported that the questions brought back difficult memories, a clear reminder of why the work needs to be done carefully.
During the seminar, staff reflected on the process:
Being present when participants respond has been important, as the questions evoke both emotions and important conversations. Several participants expressed that it felt good to ”finally tell” about discrimination. On the other hand, the questionnaire is supposed to be anonymous, which is sometimes difficult when participants need to ask to understand certain concepts or questions.
Some key lessons learnt:
- Equality data is needed to make inequalities visible.
- Anchoring and reassurance are important.
- The work requires time, skills and courage, but provides valuable insights for developing more equitable interventions.
We are now continuing to evaluate the tool and support more organisations that want to work in a structured way with equality data.
